Petersburg military veterans offered assistance

Local veterans of the armed services had a chance this week to find out more about available benefits and get help enrolling in programs. Carlton Lewis, national service officer for the Military Order of the Purple Heart and Rick Koch, state command chaplain for the Alaska National Guard met with veterans and local clergy in Petersburg. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Koch and Lewis about what’s available and how people can enroll.

Students head back to class Monday, August 29 in Petersburg as the new school year gets underway. Enrollment numbers have increased in two of the three schools and the district welcomes several newcomers to its faculty. more
The legal battle continues over a demolished home on Wrangell Avenue in Petersburg. The structure was taken down in 2014 after the borough declared it a dangerous home. The owners of the home are appealing last year’s court ruling in favor of the Petersburg borough and have filed another suit challenging borough staff visits to the property in preparation for demolition. more
