Petersburg runners finish 12th at annual Klondike relay

Petersburg’s team took 12th place overall in the Klondike International Road Relay from Skagway to Whitehorse last weekend. They call themselves “Smashanuska” and they were competing with 123 other teams from the US and Canada this year. There are ten legs in the 109-mile, overnight race. The Smashanuska runners finished in 15 hours, 8 minutes and 52 seconds. Matt Lichtenstein spoke with team member Erin Watkins:

Early sockeye returns low near Petersburg, Wrangell

Commercial gillnet catches around Wrangell and Petersburg have yielded fewer sockeye salmon than expected in the first few weeks of the season. The fleet had no openings for Stikine River king salmon in May and early June. more

Sewer line work to slow traffic south of Petersburg

Motorists can expect more traffic delays on South Nordic Drive south of downtown Petersburg next week. Work is expected to start on installation of a new sewer line in the roadway for about one mile out to the ferry terminal. That’s being done in conjunction with sidewalk, drainage and pavement replacement on that stretch of South Nordic. more
