Petersburg elementary students help fund school building in Ethiopia

Students at Rae C. Stedman Elementary School in Petersburg this week learned about the fruits of their fund raising effort that helped put up a new kindergarten building in Wondo Genet, Ethiopia. The student council in the K-5 school sought money from local businesses last year and the students also secured pledges for a reading fund raiser.

Their efforts netted over nine thousand dollars for the new building. Joe Viechnicki spoke with student council members and their teacher following a presentation on Tuesday.

Voters have just one contested race this October in Petersburg when it comes to candidates for local office. Tuesday, August 23 was the filing deadline for candidates for 19 available seats on the borough assembly and other elected boards and commissions. 15 people filed the paperwork in time to run for one of those seats and the other positions remain vacant and could be filled later by appointment. more
Two of three men involved in a Christmas Eve burglary in Petersburg were sentenced to jail time Tuesday, August 23. 27-year-old Taylor Homer and 21-year-old Anthony Sainz both appeared in separate hearings before superior court judge William Carey at the Petersburg court house Tuesday. The men were accused of breaking into a warehouse at Hungerford Hill, south of downtown Petersburg, and stealing a pickup truck, tires, tools and nine guns on Christmas Eve of 2015. more
