High school musicians perform at All-State festival

Four musicians represented Petersburg High School at the All-State Music Festival earlier this month in Anchorage. Trombone player Bud Bergen and singers Mara Sullivan and Stephanie Pfundt in treble choir as well as Fran Abbott in the mixed choir joined with top high school musicians from around Alaska. They had two intense days of rehearsals to prepare for a festival concert November 17th conducted by university music directors. Joe Viechnicki spoke with PHS music director Matt Lenhard and students Stephanie Pfundt and Bud Bergen about the experience.

Three high school musicians also have qualified for the All-Northwest Music Festival. Bud Bergen will perform with the mixed choir and Fran Abbott and Stephanie Pfundt in the treble choir in Portland this February.

Mallott discusses Mental Health logging, BC mines

Alaska’s Lieutenant Governor Byron Mallott was the keynote speaker at this week’s annual meeting of Southeast Conference in Petersburg. During his speech Wednesday, September 21, Mallott addressed climate change and fisheries, this year’s failed pink salmon runs, mining concerns on the transboundary rivers in Southeast Alaska, the Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission and the Alaska Marine Highway System. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Mallott Tuesday about some of those topics, along with logging of Alaska Mental Health Trust Land near Petersburg. more
