High school musicians perform at All-State festival

Four musicians represented Petersburg High School at the All-State Music Festival earlier this month in Anchorage. Trombone player Bud Bergen and singers Mara Sullivan and Stephanie Pfundt in treble choir as well as Fran Abbott in the mixed choir joined with top high school musicians from around Alaska. They had two intense days of rehearsals to prepare for a festival concert November 17th conducted by university music directors. Joe Viechnicki spoke with PHS music director Matt Lenhard and students Stephanie Pfundt and Bud Bergen about the experience.

Three high school musicians also have qualified for the All-Northwest Music Festival. Bud Bergen will perform with the mixed choir and Fran Abbott and Stephanie Pfundt in the treble choir in Portland this February.

Meetings planned on Tongass wilderness near Wrangell, Petersburg

The Sitka Conservation Society and U.S. Forest Service are holding meetings this week on two wilderness areas near Wrangell and Petersburg. The conservation group is hoping to hear observations on use and conditions in the Stikine-Leconte wilderness near Wrangell and the Petersburg Creek-Duncan Salt Chuck wilderness on Kupreanof Island near Petersburg. more

SE Dungeness crabbers see full-length summer, fall seasons

Commercial Dungeness crabbers have a full two-month summer and two-month fall season for most of Southeast Alaska again this year. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced this week the summer season would continue through August 15 and a fall season is planned for October and November. The season length is set based on the catch from the first week of fishing. Crabbing opened on June 15th. more
