Petersburg students create interactive museum

Younger students at Petersburg’s Rae C. Stedman Elementary School had a field trip to a museum Tuesday – though the museum was just down the hallway in the school library, and the museum’s curators were all fifth graders. The fifth grade class is studying early American cultures and for one day set up a museum of early American culture featuring 80 “artifacts” they made along with iPad presentations about their creations. Joe Viechnicki stopped by the school to speak with a few of the students and their teacher.

PHS cross country opens season in sunny Ketchikan

Petersburg High School’s cross country teams opened up their 2016 season on the road under sunny skies in Ketchikan Saturday morning. The girls team took third overall, tops among the small schools, narrowly missing second place to Thunder Mountain by just one point. more

School on northern Prince of Wales Island closes

As other schools around the state are welcoming students for the new year, one school in a small village on Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska will not be opening its doors. The school in Port Protection on northern Prince of Wales isn’t open this fall, because of a lack of students. more
