Former corrections worker joins Petersburg police force

Petersburg’s newest police officer arrived in town this week. 35-year-old Ben King worked in Idaho in corrections for seven years. He’s originally from Montana and spent his summers in high school commercial fishing in Bristol Bay. Joe Viechnicki spoke with King along with local police Captain John Hamilton about staffing in the Petersburg police department.

Petersburg voters on Tuesday will be deciding whether to allow commercial marijuana sales and importing pot into the borough for sale. Supporters of prohibition don’t want the new industry or increased drug use in the borough, while opponents say pot sales should be done out in the open, regulated and taxed. more
