Transient tax measure passes 2nd read

Petersburg’s Borough Assembly last Tuesday (2/19) passed a borough-wide extension of the transient room tax in its second reading. The four-percent tax has long been levied on hotel rooms and other traveler accommodations within the former city limits. The ordinance applies it to the broader borough-area. Appeals court upholds Petersburg murder conviction again

The Alaska Court of Appeals has upheld an 85-year-sentence for a Petersburg man convicted of murder. The case involved the stabbing death of another man in 2005 on Sing Lee Alley in downtown Petersburg. 43-year-old Anthony Haube was convicted of the crime in 2007 and later filed a civil challenge. more

The high school students are working on two 15-page research papers for a statewide competition. The Alaska Tsunami Bowl, an academic competition, will take place in Seward at the end of February. more
