Petersburg holds 2013 blessing of the fleet

Petersburg fishermen and their families, local officials, clergy and other community residents gathered in the Sons of Norway Hall on a rainy Sunday afternoon for the town’s annual Blessing of the Fleet. The ceremony is organized by the Petersburg Ministerial and Vessel Owners associations as well as the Sons of Norway. The custom is repeated in coastal communities throughout the state each spring as the busy summer fishing season draws near.

A Petersburg fisherman is working to recover two boats aground and sunken on the Kupreanof Island shoreline across from Petersburg. The 42-foot fiberglass gillnetter Moonshadow and the 57-foot wooden tender Robert G. Johnston both belong to Arnold Enge. more
Petersburg’s purple librarian, Ruth Sandvik, is 100 years old today. Family and friends are marking the occasion with fireworks last night Sunday night and a party this afternoon. Sandvik worked for years as high school librarian and has been honored for bringing the arts and radio to Petersburg. more
