Petersburg gun range work underway

Petersburg’s gun range is getting some big improvements this summer and the work is scheduled to start up this week. The work’s funded by three state grants totaling 100-thousand dollars. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Chris Cotta, the borough’s assistant public works director and the president of the Petersburg Rod and Gun Club about the project.

The construction will mean intermittent closures at the gun range between now and the end of August. Notices will be on the radio and the borough’s website.

Small town on Prince of Wales Island looks to start new city

Residents of the small town of Whale Pass on northern Prince of Wales Island could have a chance to vote on forming a new second class city sometime later this year. The state’s Local Boundary Commission will be meeting in August in Whale Pass to determine whether the community should be allowed to proceed with a vote. A final report out this month from LBC staff recommends approving a petition from residents of that town. more

Second king salmon release done near creek outside Petersburg

Another batch of small hatchery king salmon has been released from a net pen near City Creek, about three miles from downtown Petersburg. The Chinook are born and reared at the Crystal Lake Hatchery about 18 miles south of Petersburg. Hatchery manager Loren Thompson says just under 100,000 young Crystal Lake king salmon were released on May 15th. more
