pill up closeIf you have prescription drugs collecting dust in your medicine cabinet, this Saturday is a good day to get rid of it.

On Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Petersburg Police Department will be accepting medication which they will then dispose of in a proper manner. It’s part of a coordinated effort by the Drug Enforcement Agency or the DEA to prevent pill abuse and theft.

Locally, Petersburg Rexall Drug is helping to get the information out about the pill take back day. Erica Worhatch is one of the pharmacists there and she explained to Angela Denning what the take back day means:

The service is free. There will be no questions asked.

According to the DEA, the take back effort has been going on for four years. In that time, over 4.1 million pounds of pills have been collected. In one day, last April Americans turned in over 780,000 pounds of prescription drugs.
