Four Petersburg High School seniors competed at the Alaska State High School Science Symposium in Fairbanks last weekend: Ian Fleming, Summer Morton, River Quitslund, and Kyle Hagerman.

The competition included categories like organismal biology, microbiology and plant sciences. It entailed two days of the students presenting their experiments to the judges.

Ian Fleming took second place out of all the science categories and will be going to nationals at the end of the month.

Senior Summer Morton has been to the state science symposium three times. The previous two years she took sixth place overall. This time she took first place in the microbiology category. She told Angela Denning that she didn’t find out how she had done until the event’s banquet.

The top students receive cash rewards for placing at state. The top four overall winners also get scholarships. For taking second place overall, Ian Fleming received a $4,500 scholarship.
