This year’s winner of the Petersburg salmon derby says he had a long, nerve-wracking fight with the prize winning 50.9-pound fish.

Scott Stafford went to high school in Petersburg but lives in Rochester, Minnesota and is a doctor at the Mayo Clinic. He says he started fishing Petersburg’s derby in 2006 onboard the fishing vessel Odin. That boat was nearby when he landed the winner Saturday morning. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Stafford by phone about the winning fish.
