PETERSBURG-AK Petersburg’s elementary school students raised nearly $8500 earlier this month for a major children’s hospital in the lower-48. St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital in Memphis is known nationally for treating needy children with catastrophic diseases like cancer.
With the help of their teachers and local sponsors, the elementary student council organized a “Mathalon” to raise money for St. Judes. Teacher Christine Wallace says the goal of the program was to help others in need while practicing math at the same time.
Wallace says kindergartner Wyatt King raised 554 dollars – the biggest single amount for any student. 101 kids took part in the effort. Matt Lichtenstein spoke with Wallace and some of the students
