PETERSBURG, AK The privately-owned marine railway used for hauling vessels in Petersburg is back in action this month. Piston and Rudder Services pulled its first vessel the 58-foot seiner “Defiant” from the waters of the Wrangell Narrows at high tide on Thursday afternoon. Piston and Rudder this spring purchased the shipyard formerly called Petersburg Shipwrights, after that business closed for the winter. The closure temporarily left larger vessel owners no place in town to haul boats for maintenance and repair work. Joe Viechnicki stopped by the shipyard Thursday to watch the re-opening.
