It’s certainly not the first time anyone’s paddled through the Wrangell Narrows, but it might be the first time someone’s paddled the waterway standing up. U.S. Coast Guard Anacapa executive officer Rick Mozolic on Sunday, June 16 traveled on his standup paddleboard about 19 miles from Midway rock at the southern end of the narrows to Petersburg’s harbor, not quite the entire length, but an impressive feat nonetheless. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Mozolic about the journey and started out asking him how he got the idea.

Mozolic says he hopes at some point to do the full 22-mile transit of the Wrangell Narrows. And for the record, he was wearing a life jacket for the journey.
