Changes to Petersburg’s recycling program probably will not be made until this fall.
The borough’s public works director says the change from blue plastic bags and a private company contracting for collection to borough collection and new 96-gallon containers for local households will not happen for about six months.

It’s been a controversial topic in the community. Joe Viechnicki spoke with public works director Karl Hagerman about the transition away from the blue plastic bags.

Hagerman says the borough hasn’t yet decided on the schedule for curbside pickup but it will be a different day of the week than garbage collection. He says over 90 percent of customers are participating in the current recycling program. As a whole, the community is recycling about 16 percent of it’s total solid waste. The borough’s goal is to increase that diversion rate to 30 percent in the next two years.
