Fire destroyed one trailer and damaged another at Papke’s Landing, 10 miles south of Petersburg on Sunday afternoon.
The Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department was just wrapping up training in Scow Bay when the call came in around 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Residents in a home near Rory’s Road reported the fire broke out in two trailer homes on their property, one used as a residence and another used as an office.

“The occupants were in the 14 by 70 home and they heard some popping going on, smelled some plastic burning and they went outside and the office, as we’ll call it, was pretty fully engulfed in flame when they called 911,” explained volunteer fire department spokesman Dave Berg explained. “They did try a bit of a response with fire extinguishers but it was not enough to extinguish the blaze or even do much with the level of fire that they had at the time.”

The main residence on the property suffered only some heat damage from the flames. As for the other two structures, Berg said the office trailer was fully engulfed by flames and pretty much destroyed by the time volunteers arrived on the scene. Crews were able to save a fifth-wheel trailer by stringing a large diameter hose and dousing the flames.

“The other trailer, the office trailer was lost,” Berg said. “The fifth-wheel trailer was partially damaged to the extent of having heat damage that affected the tires on it and it also, the flames actually got inside the structure itself, the fifth wheeler, and caused some damage inside, some heavy smoke damage.”

The department brought its tanker truck to use as a water source. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No one was injured in the blaze.
