While the Petersburg borough’s proposed budget for the upcoming year does not yet cut hours in the community gym and pool, there are closures in that facility planned this spring. The reason is a severe staffing shortage.

Starting May 1st the gym and pool will be closed on Sundays and Mondays. In addition both will be closed May 18th through the 31st for maintenance. The Sunday and Monday closures are supposed to end after May but could continue.

Parks and Recreation has 10 positions it is trying to fill in the department, including a facility specialist, a maintenance laborer and seven life guards. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Parks and Recreation director Chandra Thornburg about the reasons behind these closures.

Other closures are also planned this month, on Easter Sunday and Tuesday, April 23rd. Hours at the pool and gym could also be reduced this year if the borough sees state funding cuts proposed in the governor’s budget.
