Each year an elementary principal in Alaska is recognized for the high teaching standards they set, as well as the positive climate they create for students, staff, and families. Last week the Alaska Association of Elementary School Principals announced that Petersburg’s Heather Conn is the National Distinguished Principal for 2024. Conn has been the principal of Rae C. Stedman Elementary since 2019. Before that she taught 4th grade and special education at the school.

Petersburg School District Superintendent Erika Kludt-Painter nominated Conn for the award.

Conn sat down with KFSK’s Hannah Flor to talk about why she loves her work and the surprise of receiving the award. She says there are a few things that she focuses on in trying to be an excellent principal.

Conn will travel to Washington D.C. in October to accept the award.
