
Petersburg got 16 inches of snow on Sunday, and roughly a foot more overnight, according to the National Weather Service.
Sunday’s snowfall broke the historic daily record by six inches. It was the second daily record broken within the week.
Petersburg has gotten over 50 inches of snow since last Monday. Last year, only about 24 inches of snow fell during the entire winter season; the year before saw about 57 inches total.
Over two feet of snow has fallen in Petersburg since Sunday morning. All that snow has led to a number of closures and cancellations in town.
The school district got a snow day on Monday, Dec. 15, and some small local businesses are closed or opening late. The Borough offices are closed, but some departments like public works, police, and emergency services are operating.
Petersburg’s Mayor Bob Lynn canceled the Borough Assembly meeting that was scheduled for Monday night; agenda items will be carried forward to the Jan. 5 meeting. The Tidal Network community listening session scheduled for Tuesday night, Dec. 16, has been canceled by the Central Council of the Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska.
The weather service said Petersburg can expect several more inches of snow Monday night and cooler temperatures going into next week.
