Petersburg’s high school basketball season began for the varsity Lady Vikings with a two-day tournament in Metlakatla on Jan. 3-4. While the girls didn’t win their games against the Metlakatla Miss Chiefs, head coach Matt Pawuk said the girls made great strides during their games.

KFSK’s Taylor Heckart sat down with Pawuk to talk through the varsity team’s strategy. Pawuk said the Petersburg girls are working through learning a new approach to defense, which is different from the way the team has played in the past.

Pawuk said that Metlakatla’s strategy during the first game also caught the team by surprise.

Metlakatla beat Petersburg 59-23 on Jan 3. While Petersburg’s team was able to outscore Metlakatla in the final quarter on Jan. 4, it wasn’t enough, and the Miss Chiefs won 47-25.

“Anytime you take the court, you want to win,” Pawuk said, “But I told the girls, nobody should be hanging their head after this weekend.”

He said that the team knows what they have to work on in future practices, and he’s excited for the rest of the season.

Petersburg is hosting a boys and girls JV basketball tournament this week with games today, Jan. 9, at 5 p.m., and tomorrow, Jan 10, at 3:30 p.m.

The next girls’ JV tournament will take place in Wrangell on Jan. 16-17.
