Petersburg’s varsity Lady Vikings competed in Wrangell’s homecoming basketball games on Jan. 16-17. The girls lost 42–28 on Friday, and 53–40 on Saturday.

While the girls didn’t win either of their games, coach Matt Pawuk said the girls still had a strong performance on the court.

“I honestly couldn’t be happier with how my kids played,” he said. “There’s no point in being out on the floor unless you’re going to have fun with it and you’re going to be fun to watch and play hard.”

In that spirit, Pawuk told KFSK’s Taylor Heckart that the team implemented a new, more aggressive, defensive strategy: a full court press.

“I’m really excited about the potential of our full court press,” Pawuk said. “And just what that looks like as we get a chance to kind of fine tune things.

The Lady Vikings will be competing in Craig on Jan. 23-24.

The boy’s JV and varsity teams will have home games that same weekend; the schedule can be found here.
