February measures more snow than the last 7 years

Recent snow surveys near Petersburg have shown more snow than in the past seven years. That’s good news for the drought the region has been experiencing. The drought status was lowered to “abnormally dry” in mid-January.

Southeast Alaska fossil declared a new species and given a Tlingit name

A fossil of a marine reptile in Southeast Alaska has officially been declared a new species. The 220 million year old Thalattosaur is older than the dinosaurs. Tlingit elders have named it after a well-known creature in their traditional stories.

Local talent show to raise funds for PHS art students’ travel

Petersburg High School art students are gearing up for Art Fest this spring. It’s a region-wide event that brings art students together and this year it will be in Juneau, April 22-27.

Governor weathered out of Petersburg leaving residents disappointed

Petersburg residents were disappointed Monday when Governor Mike Dunleavy cancelled his trip to town due to snowy weather. He was going to meet with community officials and kick off a series of community meetings around the state on budget issues. A small group of residents went on with a protest anyway.

Governor Mike Dunleavy will be in Petersburg Monday meeting with community officials and holding a town hall meeting that night. He plans to meet with borough officials, PMC, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, the school district, and residents.
