ADF&G and trappers teach others about releasing pets

Alaskans trap and snare all over the state for food and fur. And every once in a while, a pet might get into one by accident. At a recent workshop in Petersburg, a state biologist and local trappers came together to teach the public what to do if it happens.

“To try and get the bear issue to drop before school starts we started issuing citations,” said Police Chief Jim Kerr. This follows a new garbage law passed by the borough last year requiring residents to make a “reasonable effort” to secure garbage.

All Southeast candidates move on to the general election but Stedman a clear favorite

In Southeast Alaska, there were no competitive primaries for state House and Senate. All candidates in the primaries will advance to the ranked choice general election. In the House District 2 race, which includes Petersburg, Sitka, and most of Prince of Wales Island, independent Rebecca Himschoot of Sitka received 54 percent of the vote, with Republican Kenny Karl Skaflestad of Hoonah bringing in 46 percent.
