Outbreaks of measles nationwide inspire preparation at the Petersburg School District

Measles was once nearly eliminated in the United States. But there have already been seven measles outbreaks in the country this year. That’s nearly twice as many as all of last year. In Petersburg, the school district is taking its first steps in case the highly contagious disease reaches town.

Proposal for Crystal Lake Hatchery king salmon heads to Board of Fisheries.

A proposal headed to the Alaska Board of Fisheries next year would change how a popular run of king salmon is managed near Petersburg. The town’s Fish and Game Advisory Committee approved a draft management plan for king salmon reared at Crystal Lake Hatchery, about 17 miles south of town.

Petersburg School District will join likely lawsuit against the state for lack of education funding

The Petersburg School District will join a group that is planning to sue the state for failure to properly fund education. The Petersburg School Board voted unanimously to join the Coalition of Education Equity at their meeting on April 16. The nonprofit advocates for education policy in Alaska. Executive Director Caroline Storm addressed the school board at its last meeting.
