Petersburg Borough and Mental Health’s Trust Land Office try to find common ground on subdivision design

Alaska’s Mental Health Trust Land Office is hoping to sell more than 100 lots in a subdivision south of Petersburg. But last fall, the Petersburg Borough Assembly voted unanimously to reject the design of the subdivision, saying it would create confusion, ill will, and expense to the borough. During a work session on March 4, assembly members and Trust Land Office officials tried to find a way to move forward with the proposed subdivision. But as KFSK’s Hannah Flor reports, the meeting ended without any formal agreements.

Petersburg’s Public Health Nurse: How to avoid measles when it’s on the rise nationwide

More and more cases of measles have been documented in the United States over the last two years. And there have already been 41 cases of measles in the first two months of this year, compared to the 58 cases in all of 2023. But while measles has been reported in 16 states, it has not yet reached Alaska. Petersburg and Wrangell’s Public Health Nurse Erin Michael is hoping travelers enjoying the upcoming spring break don’t get the highly contagious virus.

Chrystine Lynn is honored with inaugural Petersburg Young Leader award

Petersburg’s Chamber of Commerce gave out a new award during its annual banquet on February 24. Chrystine Lynn, who is 25, received the Petersburg Young Leader award. The award honors a young person whose acts of community service and dedication make them a role model in the community. Lynn serves with the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department and coaches youth volleyball and basketball at Petersburg Parks and Recreation.

Borough Assembly looks at raising land sale cap

When the Petersburg Borough sells land assessed at more than $500,000, that sale has to go to a public vote. An ordinance before the Petersburg Borough Assembly would amend Petersburg’s municipal code to increase that cap to two million dollars. The public will be able to weigh in on the ordinance at its second reading during the next Petersburg Borough Assembly meeting on Monday, March 4.

Proposal could allow developers to buy Borough land at below its assessed value

Petersburg municipal code doesn’t allow the borough to sell its land to private citizens and for-profit businesses at below assessed value. Now the Petersburg Borough Assembly is considering allowing those sales if the land will be used for public good. Petersburg residents will have a chance to weigh in on the change at the Borough Assembly’s next meeting on Monday, March 4.
