Understaffing and a heavy volume of mail have created long wait times during reduced hours at Petersburg’s Post Office this month. Customers report waiting in line, doing their best to social distance, for up to 45 minutes inside the facility. A post office spokesman said relief is coming but not until later this summer.

A 40-year-old Nevada man was sentenced Wednesday for a shipment of illegal drugs to Petersburg last fall but is done with his jail time.

There’s a silver lining to this soggy summer in Southeast Alaska. Hydroelectric reservoirs that were impacted by a multi-year drought have rebounded and are nearly full this month.

Petersburg will plan on in-person voting for its municipal election this October. The borough assembly Monday opted for that instead of by-mail balloting only.
