People in Petersburg may get a glimpse of two military planes from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson just after noon Friday, May 15. It’s part of statewide flyover this week to salute health care workers and first responders for the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the first time in 62 years, Petersburg heads into the 17th of May with no community-wide plans for a Little Norway Festival. Some folks are still marking the occasion, albeit on a smaller scale. Others find themselves with a quiet week ahead for the first May in decades.

The Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department put out a grass fire Wednesday morning near the borough’s baler facility and landfill. Department spokesman Dave Berg said it was caused by some hot ash dumped by the borough in that area. The fire burned about 150 square feet of grass with very dry and warm conditions the region is under this week.

People in Petersburg may have noticed a three-story house being barged into town Friday evening and tying up at the drive down float in South Harbor.

Some bars reopened in Petersburg Friday, May 8 as allowed under the state’s second phase of a plan to reopen businesses that have been closed for over a month.
