Hunting for geese, ducks and other waterfowl in much of Southeast Alaska comes to a close this Monday, December 16.

Christmas bird count week underway in Petersburg

A nationwide citizen science project counting birds is in its 120th year in 2019. Volunteers take part in the Audubon Christmas Bird Count this month in communities across the country.

Middle schoolers take on robotics competitions

Teams of programmers and problem solvers are competing in middle school-age robotics competitions this month. A team of sixth graders from Mitkof Middle School in Petersburg was in a virtual competition December 7 and two teams of seventh and eighth graders head to Juneau to compete in-person December 14.

Officials discuss uncertainty for dredging disposal costs

Local officials this week dug into the details of a multi-million dollar dredging project proposed for Petersburg’s South Harbor. The municipality would be required to fund a portion of the dredging work and will have to decide whether to green light the work and how to pay for it. There’s still some uncertainty about the cost of disposing of the dredged material.

Craig, Wrangell challenge Viking wrestlers at only home matches

Petersburg High School’s wrestling team had its only home matches of the season last Saturday. 18 from PHS had matches against wrestlers from Wrangell, Craig and other Prince of Wales Island teams.
