For the past half dozen years, locals and visitors attending Petersburg’s Little Norway Festival may have noticed those ice bergs slowing melting in the sun on main street, a center piece for the week-long celebration of the town’s Norwegian culture. Gathering those bergs from the chilly waters of Frederick Sound is a relatively new part of the festival and honors the founding of the town.

The chief of the U.S. Forest Service has responded to the Petersburg borough that the federal agency is conducting an audit of the timber program on national forest land in the Alaska Region.

Petersburg High School students had an easier time this year surveying the position of the LeConte Glacier near Petersburg. A team of six students continued the tradition of recording the annual location of the glacier’s face dating back to 1983.

Orthopedic surgeon Al Gross launched a listening tour in Petersburg Tuesday, with an eye toward a possible campaign for the U.S. Senate seat held by Dan Sullivan in 2020.
