State fills wildlife biologist positions in Southeast

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s division of wildlife conservation has filled a number of its vacant positions in Southeast Alaska. The division had lost a number of long-time biologists to retirement and job changes last year, leaving it short staffed.

Petersburg magistrate judge to retire this month

Petersburg’s magistrate judge Desi Burrell is retiring at the end of next week after a little more than 20 years working for the court system. Burrell was hired in 1998 as the clerk of court. Within a year she changed to deputy magistrate. Then in 2011 she was hired as magistrate judge. Joe Viechnicki spoke with her this week about her time in the courthouse in Petersburg and budget challenges facing the court system.

Pilot study of black-tailed deer underway near Petersburg

A three-year pilot study is underway to come up with an estimate of Sitka black-tailed deer numbers on Mitkof Island near Petersburg. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game will use a combination of techniques for counting deer and could use the results elsewhere in the region.
