PHS volleyball third seed for region tournament

Petersburg High School’s varsity volleyball team won four matches and lost two on its home court over the weekend, securing the third seed among the region’s 2A teams.
The Vikings beat Skagway, Metlakatla, Klawock and Haines while losing to Craig and Wrangell. The match against the Wolves went to five games late Saturday night. Joe Viechnicki spoke with coach Jaime Cabral about the weekend’s action.

Decolonizing Alaska art opens in Petersburg

A multi-media exhibit of works by Alaskan artists called “Decolonizing Alaska” opens at two venues in Petersburg Friday night November 2nd. The touring show features 30 pieces made by 31 artists, including paintings, carving, sculpture, video and weaving. Petersburg is the last stop on a two-year tour for this show.

General elk hunt closed around Petersburg, Wrangell

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is closing elk hunting on many, but not all, of the islands in central Southeast Alaska around Petersburg, Wrangell and Kake. The emergency closure for most of game management unit 3 takes effect just before midnight, Thursday, November 1st.

Galvin campaigns for congressional seat in final week

With less than a week to go before the state general election, independent candidate Alyse Galvin is making her case why she should represent Alaskans in the U.S. Congress. Galvin is challenging 23-term-incumbent Don Young and faced off with him in a debate aired on radio, TV and online last week. Galvin, of Anchorage, is an education funding advocate and has worked as a teacher, business owner and hotel manager.

New Petersburg haunted house open for two nights

Ghouls and goblins have taken over the sally port, or garage, of the new Petersburg Police Department this week, just in time for Halloween. It’s the first of what’s hoped to be an annual Halloween haunted house at the police station. Guylynn Etcher is organizing it and Joe Viechnicki spoke with her about how the idea came about.
