Newest Petersburg assembly members have homework to complete

The newest members of Petersburg’s borough assembly say they’ve got some homework to do to get caught up on issues coming before the assembly this fall and winter. One says he’ll be at meetings starting this month while another says it could be the middle of next month before he takes his seat.

Board of Game tackles Southeast hunting changes at January meeting in Petersburg

The state’s Board of Game meets in Petersburg in January to tackle proposed changes to hunting and trapping regulations around Southeast. The board of Fisheries has held meetings in Petersburg before, but it’s a first for the Board of Game. The board is made up of seven members who set open and closed seasons and areas for hunting and trapping, bag limits and methods for harvesting animals.

Lohr opens solo show at Petersburg’s museum

Petersburg artist Ashley Lohr opens up her first solo show in Petersburg in nearly two years tonight at the Clausen Museum. She’ll be showing eight medium-sized, square paintings done with interior house paint and painted this summer. The show is called “Room of Squares” and brings back some of the angles and abstract geometric compositions from her earlier work, using paints she featured in her time in graduate school.

Petersburg cold storage cuts hours, manager’s pay

Petersburg’s community cold storage has cut back hours along with pay for its one employee after Ocean Beauty Seafoods announced the permanent closure of its Petersburg plant. The cold storage holds fish, meat and other frozen foods. It opened in 2007 and is run by the Petersburg Economic Development Council.

Vote sends message on Petersburg’s senior tax exemption

A sales tax exemption for Petersburg residents 65 and older will remain on the books after voters turned out this week to defeat a proposal to end that tax break. People on both sides of the issue aren’t surprised by the result and don’t expect the question to resurface again in the near future.
