Five people are running for two seats on the Petersburg borough assembly this fall. Another past member of the Petersburg city council is seeking his first term on the assembly. Bill Tremblay is also the president of the KFSK board but he said he’ll resign that seat if he’s elected.

Petersburg’s Post Office was closed Thursday because of a hazardous materials spill. The U.S. Postal Service issued a statement that a package at the facility had leaked some mercury. Customers at the building Thursday were asked to leave.

Plans are coming into focus for timber harvest, cabin construction, stream restoration and road building on the Tongass National Forest around Petersburg, Wrangell and Kake for the next 15 years. The U.S. Forest Service is taking comment for two more weeks on proposed work that could happen on national forest land in the area.
