New cultural festival opens this week in Petersburg

A new three-day cultural festival will be held at Sandy Beach park in Petersburg this weekend, focusing on preparing and preserving food from the waters and forests of Alaska. The Fall Adult Culture Festival is a new offering for the community and going on at the same time as the Rainforest Festival. There is some overlap between the two, with a food preparation workshop all day Saturday.

Governor signs pharmacy bill in Juneau

Governor Bill Walker Tuesday, September 4 signed into law a bill that will tighten regulations on pharmacy benefit management companies. Those companies are hired by health insurers to negotiate the price of medications between the companies that make the drugs and the businesses that sell them to customers. House bill 240 had bi-partisan support in the Alaska legislature and support from Alaskan pharmacies. It was opposed by pharmacy benefit management companies, called PBMs, as well as health insurance providers.

PHS relay swim teams strong in home opener

Petersburg High School’s swim teams combined to finish in fifth place both Friday and Saturday at the opening meet of the season in their home pool.
For both days of competition, the girls team was fourth out of the seven teams competing here last weekend, while the boys team was fifth. Over 100 swimmers and divers competed from other Southeast high schools. Teams from Juneau-Douglas took first place both days.

Petersburg assembly approves Southeast conference spending on second try

Petersburg’s borough assembly Monday took their second vote on travel spending for an upcoming annual meeting of the Southeast Conference, a regional economic development organization. This time around the assembly had the votes to approve 15-hundred dollars to send Petersburg’s nominee to the Ketchikan meeting this month, despite continued opposition.
