Friends, family and faculty Tuesday, May 29 celebrated 45 students in the graduating class of 2018 at Petersburg High School. The commencement ceremony featured performances by the high school’s concert choir and concert band.

Chenault campaigns in Southeast for Republican nomination for governor

Nikiski Republican state representative and former construction worker Mike Chenault is hoping to the be Republican party’s nominee for governor of Alaska. Chenault worked for 30 years in oil field construction support on the Kenai Peninsula. He has served eight terms in the Alaska House representing that area and has been House speaker for four of those terms.

State senator opposes last minute spending additions

Sitka Republican state senator Bert Stedman missed some of the final days of this past legislative session attending his daughter’s university graduation in Montana. Stedman, who represents Petersburg in the state senate, explains Alaska is not out of its fiscal crisis. He says if he had been there he would have opposed last minute spending added into state budgets to get agreement on the spending plan and bring about an end to the session. The senator was in Petersburg for the Little Norway Festival and he stopped by KFSK.

State rep looks back on session’s impact for Southeast residents

Petersburg’s representative in the Alaska House calls the end of the past legislative session a “more raw form of democracy” with law makers voting across party lines and many bills getting approved in the final days. Sitka Democratic representative Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins was in Petersburg for the Little Norway Festival week, meeting with constituents and enjoying some of the events. Joe Viechnicki spoke with him about the session and important legislation for Petersburg.
