Medical center foundation holds annual membership meeting

A local non-profit foundation that helps with health care needs in Petersburg has its annual membership meeting this week. The Petersburg Medical Center Foundation was established in 1990 and raises money for medical equipment, scholarships and education funding for employees at the community hospital. In recent years, fund raisers like the Paddle Battle in the Narrows have paid for new wheelchairs and a shower chair at the medical center.

Classical singing, piano on tap in Petersburg

There’s a free concert Thursday May 3rd in Petersburg of classical singing and piano. Soprano Katharine Dain will perform with Jeffrey Grossman on piano. The tour also has stops this month in Sitka, Skagway, Haines and Juneau.

Fishing organization honors late Petersburg diver

The United Fishermen of Alaska have honored Mike Bangs of Petersburg, who died in February, as the organization’s fisherman of the year for 2018. Bangs, a commercial diver and fisherman, was 62. The UFA noted that he was an industry leader in the development of the herring roe-on-kelp fisheries and dive fisheries in Southeast.

The Petersburg borough has filled one top job due to be vacant this summer and is screening applicants for another. The municipality is seeking a new police chief and has filled the deputy clerk’s job.

PHS baseball to host final home games after losses in Juneau

Petersburg High School’s baseball team will be hosting Sitka later this week after dropping three road games to Juneau-Douglas in the capital city last weekend.
The Vikings and Crimson Bears played three games shortened to five innings. Juneau won 14-0 Friday night and then 13-0 and 10-0 in a double-header Saturday.
Petersburg coach Jim Engell says his team is keeping a positive attitude and is improving.
