Scientists are on the lookout for an invasive crab species expected to move north into Alaskan waters. This year in Southeast Alaska, they added a new tool to the monitoring effort for European green crab, a threat to the state’s shellfish and salmon.

Petersburg’s borough assembly later this winter may continue its discussion of legislation to transfer national forest land to five new Native corporations. The assembly this month heard from supporters and opponents of the bill.

Heavy rainfall damaged some forest roads, caused at least one landslide and flooded some ditches, yards and homes in the Petersburg area last week. But the area escaped relatively unscathed compared to the natural disaster that occurred to the north in Haines.

The Petersburg borough this month rolled out an online health dashboard and draft community plan for COVID-19 mitigation measures. That plan includes local guidelines for health measures to slow the spread of coronavirus as case numbers rise or fall.
