Rate hikes for curbside collection and fines for unsecured garbage cans are part of a new ordinance that passed its first of three readings by the Petersburg borough assembly Monday. The changes are the result of a rate study and ongoing problems with bears seeking an easy meal.

Petersburg is revising a nearly 50-year-old local law on disease control. A proposed draft law removes the possibility for a health officer to force vaccination but still allow measures to prevent the spread of infectious disease from people coming to Petersburg.

Petersburg still has a high number of active COVID-19 cases and like other places is feeling a shortage of testing and treatment supplies.

Hunters continue to report success in the month-long moose season on the islands and mainland of central Southeast Alaska around Petersburg, Wrangell and Kake. Halfway through the season the Alaska Department of Fish and Game reports a harvest of 66 bull moose.
