Petersburg’s mayor Mark Jensen is planning a town hall meeting next week on impacts from the proposed state budget. Officials are hoping to come up with a more complete picture of the potential loss of state revenue and what it would mean to the municipal government, schools and hospital. They also want to hear input from the public about the governor’s proposal.

Petersburg’s borough assembly Monday supported the first reading of a change to way people would be elected to the assembly in the future. The proposal would force candidates to run for one seat each election, instead of voters choosing from a pool of candidates for multiple seats. As written, the ordinance would not put this change before voters.

Clear skies and cold weather is forecast to continue is Southeast Alaska in the short term, with little relief in sight for dwindling hydroelectric reservoirs.

Petersburg’s backup diesel generators are expected to be running 24 hours a day, seven days a week starting Tuesday, February 25.
