Kake leaders plead for hydro power connection

Leaders from the small Southeast community of Kake continued their pleas for a connection to cheaper hydro electric power, before a regionwide gathering of civic and business officials in Petersburg last week. The envirormental review of the power transmission line project is underway and construction could start in the next few years.

New all women art show opens

A new art exhibition opens at the Clausen Museum today. Titled “A Curiosity of Doors,” the show is a response to a rogue art project that showed up near Papke’s Landing last winter. Melati Kaye interviewed some of the women participating in the show and produced a preview.

Times columnist covers Alaskan Senate race

New York Times columnist Gail Collins was in Petersburg this week covering the U.S. Senate race between Democrat Scott McAdams and Republican Joe Miller. Collins covers politics for the Times and has worked for the newspaper since 1995. In 2001, she became the first woman ever appointed editor of the Times editorial page. Joe Viechnicki spoke to Collins Thursday following the public forum with the two U.S. Senate candidates and started out with a question about what drew her to cover the Alaskan contest.

US Senate candidates argue earmarks in Petersburg

Alaska’s Democratic and Republican nominees for US Senate faced off for the first time during an event in Petersburg, Thursday morning. Scott McAdams and Joe miller answered questions at an annual meeting of Southeast Alaskan community and business leaders. As Matt Lichtenstein reports, the discussion kept coming back to the issue of federal earmarks.

State may not use federal funds for new Ferry

Plans for a new state ferry in Alaska have hit a potentially serious roadblock. State transportation officials this week said they were told they cannot use federal money for the vessel without more environmental review. That means the Alaska Class Ferry project could lose about half its funding. But supporters hope to make up the difference with state money.
