Undercover drug investigation leads to arrests

A three-month investigation lead to the arrest of four people in Petersburg this week on felony drug charges. Police allege the suspects sold small quantities of a variety of drugs, including cocaine, morphine and methamphetamine, to a person working undercover for law enforcement. All four suspects have pleaded Not Guilty and the first of their trials is slated for mid-November. The operation was a joint effort of Petersburg police, State Troopers, and the group Southeast Alaska Cities Against Drugs or SEACAD.

Firehall bids come in way lower than expected

It looks like building Petersburgs new fire hall on Haugen drive will cost substantially less than expected. City officials opened five contractor bids this week for the 18 thousand square foot building. All the bids were well below cost estimates and available funding for the project.

SE pinks wind down

A better-than-expected pink salmon season has been winding down in Southeast Alaska. As of early this week (Aug 25th), the Seine Fleet had harvested about 20 million pinks which is about on par with projections. But the fish have been bigger than average and they’ve been worth more than last year on the dock. Meanwhile, there are signs of a big pink run next year.
