Southeast troll fishermen have had a better than average year. Coho are coming in fatter at the start of this season than they were at the end of last year’s run. Physical therapist volunteers with earthquake victims

More than half a year after the devastating earthquake shook the Caribbean Island nation of Haiti, residents there are still dealing with the aftermath and recovering from injuries suffered in that natural disaster. Pat McAdoo, a physical therapist who does relief work at the Petersburg Medical Center several times a year, volunteered for eight days in July at the University of Miami’s project Medishare hospital in Port-au-Prince. The retiree and Anchorage resident worked with a team of volunteers from around the North American continent at the Bernard Mevs hospital, doing physical therapy with earthquake victims. Joe Viechnicki talked with McAdoo about the experience.

Kake residents recognize intertie road benefits

Kake residents say a road and ferry link to the nearby community of Petersburg would boost the town's economy and help in medical emergencies. However, some in the community located on Northwest Kupreanof island, say they are willing to forgo the road if it sped up the process of linking up to the intertie.

PIA gives construction training to local natives

Local native youth have had the opportunity to crack pavement, run excavators and get some job skills this summer. The Petersburg Indian Association has various construction projects underway, for which they are hiring and training younger tribal members.

Popp adds to medals from World Eskimo-Indian Olympics

A Petersburg police officer has added to his collection of medals from the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics. Twenty-five year old Jared Popp brought home a silver medal in the blanket toss held during the annual event in Fairbanks last month. Popp, originally from Fairbanks, has been attending the annual event for most of his life. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Popp about this year’s competition.
