Traditional foods program aims to combat diabetes
Diabetes is a growing nationwide concern. In Alaska, the national Center for disease control found a 3% jump in the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes or 20,000 new cases over the last decade. The Southeast Alaskan Regional Health Consortium’s WISEFAMILIES program tries to address the issue among Southeast Native communities by promoting more traditional foods in people’s diets. Martha Pearson is the coordinator for the program. Melati Kaye talked with Pearson on a recent visit to Kake, where she helped with a sea asparagus gathering event.
