Traditional foods program aims to combat diabetes

Diabetes is a growing nationwide concern. In Alaska, the national Center for disease control found a 3% jump in the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes or 20,000 new cases over the last decade. The Southeast Alaskan Regional Health Consortium’s WISEFAMILIES program tries to address the issue among Southeast Native communities by promoting more traditional foods in people’s diets. Martha Pearson is the coordinator for the program. Melati Kaye talked with Pearson on a recent visit to Kake, where she helped with a sea asparagus gathering event.

Pets visit long term care unit

Last week was Pet day at the Petersburg medical center. The annual event invites the community and their pets to the center’s long term care unit to visit with residents. Melati Kaye attended and found many more visiting pets playing many more roles than you’d expect.

Painter opens show at Clausen Museum

A local woman opens up a show of her acrylic paintings from the past seven years today at the Clausen Museum in Petersburg. Doris Olsen says she painted in high school and has since been producing works off and on, in between work and raising her son Rowan. This is Olsen’s first show in Petersburg. Her collection includes several abstract paintings, and several more that depict sea creatures. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Olsen this week about some of her work.
