Quilters gear up for 10th annual summertime camp

Petersburg’s quilt guild, the Rain Country Quilters, is celebrating its 10th year of a summertime quilting camp. This year’s camp will be Wednesday through Sunday, August 11-15 and spots are still available in the numerous classes planned for that week. Joe Viechnicki spoke with quilt camp coordinator Liz Bacom and Rain Country Quilt guild president Savann Guthrie about the program for this year.

High spirits at the Kake Dog salmon festival

Spirits were high at Kake’s 16th annual Dog Salmon Festival this weekend. Damp marine weather made for a lower than normal turnout at the native community’s festival on the Northwest end of Kupreanof island. The skies cleared the day of the festival and attendees enjoyed Native foods and various races and prizes. House candidates discuss ferry system, seniority

Two Republican candidates for State House District Two last week debated ideas for improving ferry and road links in Southeast as well as the importance of seniority in the Alaska legislature. Residents in District 2 voting the Republican ballot in the state’s August 24th primary will chose between five-term incumbent Peggy Wilson of Wrangell and challenger Steven Samuelson of Petersburg.

Sales activity dropped, jobs increased locally in 2009

Petersburg saw a decline in overall commercial sales last year, and also a drop in earnings for the local fishing fleet. However the town actually saw a small increase in jobs numbers last year, bucking region-wide and state-wide trends. Those were a few of the findings in a new economic trends report put out this month by Petersburg’s Economic Development Council.
