Young busker fiddles on Main Street

In any big city, it’s a common sight on city sidewalks to see someone, guitar case open, performing for tip money. It’s not so common in a small Alaskan town like Petersburg, but for the past few years, summertime visitors and residents have been enjoying the talents of 11-year-old fiddle player Elliot Benda. He spends his winters in Mt. Shasta California, and comes with his family on their boat to Petersburg during the summer. While he’s here, Benda sets up shop in downtown Petersburg and plays. Joe Viechnicki spoke the young fiddle player this week on Main Street

No contract agreement yet for city employees

Two days of mediated negotiations between the city of Petersburg and the union representing the bulk of city employees this month have failed to produce a new employee contract. The two sides say they could not agree on wages and benefits for the over 70 city employees but are hopeful more talks this summer will produce a new collective bargaining agreement.

Atlantic salmon caught in Sumner Strait

The first Atlantic salmon caught this year in the Petersburg-Wrangell area was reported last week.

Agner signs on as Petersburg's police chief

The acting chief of police in Petersburg has taken on the job on a permanent basis. Jim Agner has signed a five year contract to head up the Petersburg Police Department. He has done that job on an interim basis since former chief Dale Stone stepped down at the end of last year. Agner has been with the Petersburg department since April of 1994, and has worked in law enforcement since 1987. City manager Scott Hahn announced the hiring at last night’s city council meeting and Agner answered questions about the new job following the meeting.
