Fourth of July events have centennial theme

Petersburg celebrates the Independence Day holiday with a weekend full of games and events. The theme for this year’s celebration is the centennial of the city of Petersburg. The bulk of the festivities happen on Saturday and Sunday, although the first event is Thursday night. Joe Viechnicki spoke with the city’s parks and recreation director Ryan McFarland about the holiday weekend.

Interns help museums with back-logged work

Petersburg’s Clausen Memorial museum and several others around the state have been getting some much-needed help with cataloging their collections and other back-logged work this summer. This is the third year of a new internship program organized by the Alaska State Museum.

Governor receives warm welcome

Governor Sean Parnell received an enthusiastic welcome Friday in Petersburg. Local residents thanked him for sparing most of Petersburg’s capital project funding requests from a line-item veto. As a result, state grant money will pay for over 10 million dollars in new building construction and renovations in the next few years.

Jury rules, missing man presumed dead

A Petersburg jury this week ruled a man who went missing from the south end of Mitkof island in February probably committed suicide. The disappearance of 25-year-old James A. Crawford of Petersburg prompted a search effort by Alaska state troopers, divers, local volunteers, the civil air patrol and a sea dogs team. After his disappearance, his family found an email confessing to the rape of a Juneau woman last December. Joe Viechnicki has more on that story.
