Governor signs two fish bills

Governor Sean Parnell signed two pieces of fisheries legislation into law during a visit to Petersburg Friday. The bills increase the claim limit for health care costs covered by the Alaska Fishermen's Fund and extend a seafood processor tax credit.

Police ask for caution from bicyclists

Petersburg police are asking bike riders to obey traffic signs, follow the rules of the road and be more careful around pedestrians and motorists this summer. The department and the city’s public safety advisory board have both been fielding complaints about bikers riding on sidewalks and on the wrong side of the road, among other problems. Joe Viechnicki rode his bike down to the police department Monday, crashing once along the way, and spoke to acting chief Jim Agner about bike safety.

Energy cost cutting program in town

Low-income residents in Petersburg can learn about cutting their energy bills, through a program in town this summer.
The Energywise program is funded by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act….and its being conducted by Ruralcap, a statewide non-profit aiming to help low income Alaskans. Program volunteers hope to do energy-saving outreach in 12-hundred homes around the state this summer, including 90 here in Petersburg. A local energy fair is also coming up Thursday. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Rural cap’s Charlie Ess, along with Vista volunteer Christine Johnson and Energywise crew member Melissa Newman about how the program works.

First Street to get new sidewalks

Residents along First Street can expect changes outside their front door. The Petersburg Indian association will be reconstructing sidewalks on First Street from north Nordic drive, near Eagles’ Roost Park to Haugen drive. The PIA and the City held a community forum on the project Tuesday.

Petersburg fans excited about soccer World Cup

Millions around the world are glued to their TV sets this month watching thirty two nations compete in the World Cup of soccer in South Africa. One of the opening games in the tournament pitted powerhouse England against its former colony, the United States. Melati Kaye stopped by Kito’s Kave, a local Petersburg bar, to watch the rivalry go down in real time.
