Petersburg residents donate to Haiti water relief

Petersburg residents continue to contribute to aid and recovery efforts following the devastating January 12th earthquake in Haiti. Locals have given over 25-hundred dollars to an effort to bring drinking water to the people of Haiti, from its neighboring country, the Dominican Republic. Petersburg High School government teacher Jim Engell highlighted the drinking water project in a KFSK interview last month. Engell’s cousin, Kendra Luna, a pastor with the Free Methodist Church in the Domican Republic, is inolved with that effort. She says getting water to Haitians during the first week after the earthquake probably saved many lives. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Luna this month about the earthquake and the water project.

Southeast Conference, industry disappointed about timber suit

Timber industry and economic development officials in Southeast Alaska say they’re disappointed with a federal judge’s ruling last week over a court challenge to the 2008 Tongass Land Management Plan Revision. U.S. District Judge John Bates Wednesday ruled in favor of the U.S. Forest Service in a suit brought by the Southeast Conference.

Teacher describes "Field of Dreams" dream to Board

A group of local teachers and parents want a new track and athletic field in the vacant lot behind the elementary school in Petersburg. They’re calling it “Field of Dreams” and their presentation was the top item of business on this week’s school board agenda. The school board also approved the school calendar for next year, discussed fundraising efforts for Haiti, and evaluated the new Superintendent. Students honor friend's memory with Cedar benches

If you hike a ways up Petersburg lake trail from the government dock on Kupreanoff, you’ll find a new cedar bench built in memory of a Petersburg teen who loved the outdoors. Local high school seniors have built two such benches to honor and remember their close friend and classmate, Jacob Madsen. The 16-year-old died in a firearms accident while hunting in may 2008. Madsen’s friends installed one of the benches on the trail last weekend with the help of their shop teacher and the Forest Service. The other bench will be installed at Frenchy shelter which is also known as The Hilton. That’s a favorite spot for snow machiners out the road at Twin creeks. Lt. Governor addresses Chamber

Lt. Governor Craig Campbell expressed some of his views on the economy, natural resources development, tourism and transportation in a speech to the Petersburg chamber of commerce last weekend. The Eagle River Republican also took several questions from the audience. Campbell was the featured speaker at the Chamber’s annual installation banquet Saturday.
