Southeast net fisheries bolstered by chum catches in early season

Commercial gillnetting and seining catches in central Southeast Alaska have been boosted by some strong catches of chum salmon this summer. Returns of sockeye to the Stikine River near Wrangell haven’t been as strong as forecast. Meanwhile, there are some early signs of a decent return of pink salmon.

Public Health Center makes overdose rescue kits available to community

Alaska was recently awarded a multimillion dollar federal grant to combat its growing opioid problem. With the money, the state Department of Health and Social Services has launched Project Hope – which aims to distribute 5000 kits containing a life saving drug called Naloxone, also known as Narcan, around the state. The Petersburg Public Health Center received ten of those kits.

Forest Service scientists share research on changing shorelines and subsistence gathering

Shorelines in Southeast Alaska are changing fast. Sea levels are rising everywhere, but here, land is also springing back from under the weight of glaciers as they retreat.

Two scientists from the Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest Research Station teamed up to predict what our coastlines will look like in the future. They’ve also been investigating what those changes mean for coastal species, and for communities that gather them for food.

Whale entanglement expert shares best practices with Petersburg volunteers

When whales and other marine mammals get caught in nets, fishing gear, and other flotsam and jetsam, they often need humans’ help getting free.

Ed Lyman is the go-to expert on such incidents. He’s a Large Whale Entanglement Response Coordinator for the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and has been involved with close to 100 entanglements.
